• Vitreomacular traction (VMT or persistent vitreous attachment to the central macula caused by incomplete vitreous detachment) is virtually invisible to ophthalmoscopy but remarkably well documented with SD OCT. VMT, as well as degeneration of the inner retinal layers at the central fovea, are both implicated in macula hole formation.
  • This case of the week is about a patient with a frank, full thickness macula hole in one eye with reduced VA but a VMT in the fellow eye with normal vision. Serial SD OCT imaging is quite revealing and recommended in cases of both VMT and progressive macula hole formation in order to provide timely intervention if indicated.
