Association with Late AMD

• High association with Type 3 CNV, also called retinal angiomatous proliferation (RAP)
  • SDDs have a studied range of prevalence in RAP lesions between 60-87%¹⁷

• SDDs demonstrate late AMD more often than those without the presence of SDDs¹⁹
• Clinicians are under-diagnosing SDDs and their meaning in clinical practice is under-appreciated²
• Regression of SDDs often results in outer retinal atrophy and high risk for advanced AMD in the form of geographic atrophy¹⁹
  • These are cases that appear clinically/photographically benign then surprisingly convert to CNVM
