Risk Factors in Development of SDDs

  • Increasing age5
  • Late AMD
    • The likelihood of SDD presence increases with AMD severity, more likely present in GA > CNV > intermediate AMD > early AMD1
  • Possible genetic predisposition
    • Specifically risk alleles in Complement Factor H (CFH) and Age-Related Maculopathy Susceptibility 2 (ARMS2)9
  • Significantly prolonged dark adaptation, even in the setting of a clinically benign appearing macula3
  • Highest rate of occurrence is in a diagnosis of AMD11, but SDDs can be associated with other retina conditions including:
    • Sorsby macular dystrophy12
    • Adult-onset vitelliform dystrophy12
    • Pseudoxanthoma elasticum13
    • Fundus albipunctatus14
