Classification – Conforming vs Non-conforming:

Previous authors² have suggested sub-classifications of FCE, including those that exhibit conforming overlying neurosensory retinal layers and those that exhibit subretinal fluid and/or debris between the RPE/Bruchs and inner choroid within the choroidal excavation.

It is not currently known whether each different subtype portends a different visual and/or anatomical etiology, clinical course or visual prognosis. Despite its apparent benign nature, there do exist rare reports of associated choroidal neovascular membrane (CNVM) formation⁹, however, this association remains unclear and does not seem to be a common complication.

Recent literature has proposed a new classification system for FCE based on lesion morphology⁴: cone-shaped, bowl-shaped and mixed types.
