Perceptual Completion Phenomenon – Visual system “fills in” scotomas on Amsler grids, making defects appear insignificant or invisible. The brain makes assumptions the grid should be straight lines.
Poor Diagnostic Accuracy
- Sensitivity: 67-71% (Misses 1 in 3 eyes that have progressed from dry to wet AMD)
- Specificity: 99% vs. healthy controls, but only 63% vs. nonneovascular AMD
