Treatment
All patients with ARMD should be advised to quit smoking, wear UV protection when outdoors and adhere to healthy diet. Treatment with AREDS-2 vitamins taken twice daily should be initiated if ARMD progresses past the early stage.5
Before antiVEGF treatments were available, wet AMD was treated with thermal laser photocoagulation, surgical ablation, and photodynamic therapy. These methods often resulted in reduced VA and reoccurrence. The preferred treatment of Type 3 Wet AMD today is with antiVEGF injections. Vision often improves within the first 3 months of treatment but can begin to degrade in the second year of treatment. Compared to other types of wet AMD, Type 3 tends to require fewer injections but has higher rates of geographic atrophy development.6
