Wet ARMD Subtypes

Wet ARMD occurs when new blood vessels known as choroidal neovascularization (CNV) grow from the choroid, through Bruch’s membrane, and penetrate the subretinal space. The Gass Classification System divides wet AMD into 3 subtypes. Type 1 occurs when CNV proliferates below the RPE. Type 2 occurs when CNV occurs between the retina and RPE. Type 1 and Type 2 are also known as occult and classic CNV respectively. Type 3 CNV, also known as retinal angiomatous proliferation (RAP) is unique in that neovascularization begins in the retina and grows into the sub-retinal or sub-RPE space.³
