The flash electroretinogram (ERG), the single best test of overall retina function, is essentially extinguished under all conditions tested.

Topcon 3D OCT Macula Thickness OD Based upon the comparison with the normative database, the macula region is very attenuated. Note that only 1% of normal individuals have a similar macula thickness.

Histological Section as Compared to the OCT Image  Although the Photoreceptor Integrity Line, or the PIL (defined as the junction between the inner and outer segments) is barely visible in most histological sections, it is highly prominent in normal SD OCTs. The PIL, as shown above, should be continuous throughout the entire scan in

Topcon 3D OCT OD The horizontal section below demonstrates RPE cell migration3,4,5 from the outer retina to the large blood vessels in the inner retina.

Topcon 3D OCT OD Although retinal vessels are generally poorly visualized with OCT, when pigment cells migrate3,4,5 and surround them, the vessels can easily be identified.

Topcon 3D OCT OS The image below is a radial scan corresponding to the arrow within the green circle. The retina is attenuated and no PIL is present, however, the outer limiting membrane is visible (red arrow).

Topcon 3D OCT OS The Topcon 3D OCT captures 128 horizontal sections beginning from the top and going down. All sections are contained within the 6 mm x 6 mm green box. The image below is a horizontal scan through the fovea.

Topcon 3D OCT OD The fovea OD is extremely thin and the photoreceptor integrity line (PIL) is not visible. Much of the RPE has been lost as well, unmasking Bruch's membrane which is still intact.
