Visual Field Limitation: Myopia Visual Field Defects

As previously stated, myopia can cause stretching and thinning of the retina and tilting or torsion of the optic nerve head. These retinal changes may result in visual field defects that are not glaucomatous in nature, but at times, mimic glaucoma. In the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center-Brien Holden Vision Institute (ZOC-BHVI) High Myopia Registry Study, 16.1% of the visual fields of myopic patients showed visual field defects commonly seen in glaucoma.14 Unlike in glaucoma, visual fields caused by myopia typically do not progress and these patients should be monitored more frequently.
