  • Sickle cell C disease (SC) is less severe than sickle cell anemia disease (SS) and often patients are asymptomatic and unaware they have SC.1-5
  • 43% of SC patients develop proliferative sickle cell retinopathy (PSR) and without treatment 10% of these patients will go blind.4,10
  • This week’s case involves a 27-year-old black female with no visual symptoms and 20/20 VA in each eye. Panoramic ophthalmoscopy with optos® detected peripheral abnormalities and optos® FA revealed dramatic documentation of large areas of capillary avascularity and several areas of “sea fan” peripheral neovascularization in each eye.
