- Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a retinal vascular disorder that affects premature babies and is the leading cause of preventable childhood blindness.1
- Abnormal proliferation of blood vessels sometimes results in retinal detachment and blindness in advanced cases.
- ROP should be suspected in infants with low birth weight, in those who are 10 or more weeks premature, and those treated with supplemental oxygen.1
- In this week’s presentation, panoramic ophthalmoscopic images with Optomap® demonstrate one case with rather typical ROP findings and a second case with far more profound retinal changes affecting the entire mid and far peripheral retina in both eyes.
