Comments and Conclusions

• VEPs provide objective assessment of macula, optic nerve and visual pathway function.
• VEPs generally correlate well with objective tests of structure such as SD OCT.
• Pattern and flash VEPs can be used to assess the prognosis in “amblyopes” and identify those who have an organic disorder causing the VA reduction.
• Malingering patients can often be “unmasked” when a normal VEP to pattern is recorded.
• A future RR will demonstrate that subtle maculopathies and optic neuropathies can be detected with VEPs in patients believed to be hysterical or malingering.
• Using the latest in VEP technology, VEPs now can be obtained in 4-5 minutes in any clinical setting.
