Comments and Conclusions

  • In the US, the annual incidence of rhegmatogenous (rhegma means to rend or tear) retinal detachment (RRD) is approximately 12 per 100,000 in the white population with an increase in frequency over the age of 50.1
  • Patients with over 8 diopters of myopia make up 1% of the general population but have 10% of all RRDs.1
  • More than 85% of RRD cases are associated with PVDs and related tractional tears.3
  • In one major study of over 1100 cases, the majority of RRDs were caused by more than one retinal break and the macula was affected in more than 50% of the cases at presentation.3
  • Timely intervention is essential in order to preserve vision. If a “macula on” RRD is allowed to progress to a “macula off” RRD, the ultimate visual outcome worsens.
